• Indiana Educator Standards for World Languages (P-12) Public Comment

  • The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) convened committees of K-12 educators and higher education professionals to review and propose updates to the Indiana Educator Standards for World Languages (P-12).

These standards can be used by educator preparation programs to:

    • Design licensure programs for World Languages teachers.
    • Develop World Languages content preparation for candidates to meet the REPA 3 requirements for a content area and for World Languages licensure.

Any candidate recommended for licensure for World Languages needs to have mastery of all standards indicated in this document.

World Languages teachers are expected to have a broad and comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and skills needed for this educator license and to use that knowledge to help students prepare for the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century. This requires the ability to identify, comprehend, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate the basic principles, fundamental concepts, and essential content defined in these standards and to apply that knowledge to the tasks of planning and delivering effective instruction and assessment.

The purpose of this public comment period is to collect stakeholder feedback regarding the standards, some of which reflect committee-proposed revisions. IDOE welcomes constructive, actionable feedback for the draft standards during this public comment period from Monday, February 2, through 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, March 6.

IDOE will reconvene review committees to address feedback and formalize final recommendations to be presented to the Indiana State Board of Education for adoption in May 2026.
