The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) convened a committee of K-12 educators and higher education professionals to develop Indiana Educator Standards for School Social Worker. An educator preparation program can use these standards to prepare School Social Worker candidates to meet the Rules for Educator Preparation and Accountability (REPA 3) requirements for School Social Worker licensure. Any candidate recommended for licensure for School Social Worker needs to have mastery of all standards indicated in this document.
School social workers are expected to have a comprehensive understanding and specialized skill set for this school service license. School social workers will utilize their knowledge to assist students in overcoming a variety of barriers with support from family, school, and community. This school service license requires one to possess the ability to identify and render aid through assessments, consultations, and delivery of interventions to students and families within a school setting by relying on specific preparation in school social work principles, fundamental concepts, theories, and practices as defined in these standards.
The purpose of this public comment period is to collect stakeholder feedback regarding the draft standards developed by the committee. IDOE welcomes constructive, actionable feedback for the draft standards during this public comment period from Friday, February 20, through 5:00 pm ET on Friday, March 20.
IDOE will reconvene standards review committees to address feedback and formalize final recommendations to be presented to the Indiana State Board of Education for adoption in May or July 2026.
